The Coalition for Public Safety is ready to work with President-elect Trump and his transition team to ensure positive change in a safer, more just America.
We believe that after a long and disputed presidential race, justice reform provides a positive, unifying message that can heal and bring the nation together and we are ready to partner with President-elect Trump in educating legislators and American citizens on the need for reform.
“When a new President takes office in February 2017, The Coalition for Public Safety will be ready to hit the ground running,” said Coalition President, Steve Hawkins. “We echo Vice President Pence’s affirmation that the time is now for national criminal justice reform. This is the unified message that all of America’s diverse leaders and communities can rally around. From all corners of the nation, polling shows the American public wants smart reform, and our bipartisan work is testament to the power of reaching across the aisle. We’re dedicated to working with President Trump’s new administration toward a system that ensures public safety and is rooted in American values of justice and fairness.”
“We look forward to working with President-elect Trump to reduce crime rates and recidivism, make our communities safer, protect our police officers, and reduce the cost and scope of the federal government,” said Timothy Head, Executive Director of the Faith & Freedom Coalition. “President-elect Trump has a great opportunity to reduce the number of federal crimes, better protect our communities and better prepare returning offenders to be parents, spouses and employees. There are so many federal criminal laws and regulations that the Congressional Research Service can’t even count them and many of these crimes don’t even require any criminal intent. There is broad support for smart criminal justice reform and for greater use of faith based organizations that have reduced the vicious cycle of recidivism and helped make our communities safer by restoring formerly incarcerated men and women to their families and our communities.”
“The NAACP calls upon President – Elect Donald J. Trump to embrace a modern vision of smart justice reform rather than an outdated philosophy of law and order,” said Cornell William Brooks, President and CEO of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. “Across the country, we have seen governors and legislatures in red and blue states save lives and dollars by undertaking sentencing reform that leads to fairer treatment, tax dollars saved, smaller prison population, and safer communities. We call on the incoming President-Elect to stand with those that are working for a criminal justice system based not on fear and inertia but based on data and our values.”
